San Mateo Union High School District President and Board Member

  • Began four year term in December 2007, and currently serving as president
  • Worked to substantially improve the District’s financial position (bond rating was upgraded twice and reserves increased from 3% to over 10%)
  • Currently overseeing a $100 million operating budget and a $300 million capital budget
  • Championed the installation of a $30 million three megawatt solar project that will save the District almost $1 million annually in electricity costs and generate $5.1 million in California solar rebates
  • Advocated for green building standards and the adoption of energy efficient and sustainable design practices.
  • Hired an exceptional new superintendent
  • Facilitated foundation funding for an English language acquisition program offered by the Adult School

Burlingame School District President and Board Member

  • Began four year term in December 2003 and was Board president in 2006
  • Focused on closing the achievement gap, establishing language immersion, maintaining a sound financial position, serving the needs of special education students, and challenging the District to improve upon its already strong educational programs
  • Burlingame Community for Education Foundation member

San Mateo County School Boards Association President and Board Member

  • President in 2005-06
  • Organized programs on current education issues and started a mentor program for new school board members
  • Active in lobbying for state education funding

Co-Chair of Three Successful Parcel Tax/Bond Campaigns

  • Burlingame Measure A parcel tax (June 2003), passed with 72% of the vote
  • Burlingame Measure S parcel tax (November 2004) for $104, passed with 78% of the vote
  • San Mateo Union High School District Measure M facilities bond (November 2006) raised $298 million to continue the modernization of the SMUHSD’s facilities, passed with 66.5% of the vote

SMC Committee on School District Reorganization Member (July 2006 -  )

  • Reviewed proposals to change the boundary lines for San Mateo County school districts
